There was a time when life in an apartment complex was considered dull and dreary. A place where people moved in and out without ever exchanging more than a curt greeting with the neighbour was hardly conducive for interpersonal relations. The cramped interiors and lack of open space deterred social interaction. Common recreational facilities for the dwellers were virtually unheard of at that time. But today's apartment especially Cochin apartments dwellers may seem to be spoilt for choice, when it comes to recreation and leisure. Builders today offer a wide range of options from the shuttle badminton or basketball court to jogging tracks, indoor games, party areas and even swimming pools. Most of the value-additions are driven by a fast-changing customer profile inclined towards the younger age group. New buyers are increasingly expecting more than just a decent unit in a clean and safe building. They are demanding more. Target group Developers have realised that it makes sense to understand and cater to the needs of a target group that prefers an active and gregarious lifestyle, with socialising at the top of the agenda. So promoting community life in apartment buildings - communities in which people recognise one another and become friends - has become a priority for builders. Recreational facilities in most apartment complexes are designed to serve the need for socialising. A common space such as the lounge, garden, rooftop, fitness centre and games room doubles up as a venue for a daily get-together where people indulge in banter or exchange gossip. While provision of common areas is mandatory, the building rules do not specify the recreational facilities to be provided for apartments. So it is left to the builder to plan and design each amenity as a value-addition.
